Why Causes Wet Basements, Damp Basements and Leaky Basement Problems?
Over the years we have come across many wet, leaky and damp basements in Windsor, Essex County. The causes for water and moisture in basements are generally common issues we come across on a daily basis. Below are 5 of the most common causes for wet basements.
Hydrostatic Pressure – Wet soil is very heavy and places enormous pressure against your basement walls and foundation. This may cause your basement walls to bow, eventually leading to cracks and leaks. In our region we often see expansive clay soils causing structural foundation damage, leading to water seepage in basements.
Poor Grading – The ground around your foundation slopes toward your house instead of away. Eventually, rain water makes its way inside.
Missing or Damaged Gutters – If gutters and downspouts are missing or damaged water can leak into your basement and cause an excess of moisture in your home.
Condensation – Basement condensation occurs when warm, moist air comes in contact with cool basement walls. Condensation can lead to significant moisture in your basement.
Interior Water Leaks – Leaky basements can result from water leaks stemming from showers, sinks, toilets, the washing machine or dishwasher, or simply just a bad pipe.
Clogged or Broken Storm Pipe – A clogged or broken main storm pipe is a common cause of a wet basement. The pipe needs to direct water off your property.
